Thank you to all who voted in this election!
Greetings NASAP!
As I write this our 2021 NASAP Conference in Milwaukee and online is a month away.
Thus far registrations have been close to 50/50 in-person and online. As Adlerians, we know that we are social beings, and we are anxious to meet in person once more. Was it wacky to plan to be in person in Milwaukee? Perhaps. But, we committed ourselves to provide this option for our members.
In Milwaukee, we will be masked and physically distanced. The hotel has a strong commitment to cleanliness and safety. And it is also a good feeling to know that the hotel can bring back some of their staff to work the conference.
We have gone the extra mile to make the virtual conference as complete and seamless as possible. We come into this with some experience from our 2020 virtual conference, and we have worked closely with the Pfister’s in-house tech company to make this work.
The theme of the conference is Social Justice: Community Healing through Movement. We know to “trust only movement.” And we need healing. Problems with social and economic inequity in our communities leading to social unrest have taken a toll on all of us. Our communities need healing. We also need healing from a pandemic that has affected the mental health and wellbeing of so many in our society. As Adlerians, we believe in democratic principles of equality, and that leads us to a central concern for social justice. These issues, and many others, will be discussed and considered at the conference. We have a powerful program with presentations on the theme and on other topics of interest to us all.
I look forward to waving with each and every one of you at the end of May.
Tim Hartshorne

About the conference
From Thursday, May 27th to Sunday, May 30th, 2021
Milwaukee will host the annual NASAP Conference, for the first time ever!
This national conference brings together clinicians from across the U.S. and Canada interested in Individual Psychology, the theory of Alfred Adler (1870-1937).
Individual Psychology is one of the longest-standing theories of psychology and serves as a theoretic framework that integrates psychodynamic, behavioral, and systems perspectives. Individual Psychology is a historical precursor to evidence-based treatments including Narrative, CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Brief Psychodynamic, Solution-Focused, and Trauma-Informed practices (to name a few).
The 2021 Conference theme “Social Justice: Community Healing Through Movement” will include social justice perspectives both within the tradition of Individual Psychology and outside of this theoretical framework.
What is a hybrid conference?
The definition of a hybrid event is described as a physical & online meeting in which all audience members have the opportunity to participate. This year, the NASAP Conference will be held both physically in Milwaukee and virtually!
This event will include live presenters and virtual presenters with participants having the choice to attend any session they choose. Virtual attendance will go beyond just a live stream of every session and include an interactive component to help connect all participants. Regardless of how you choose to participate, we hope to provide you the opportunity to engage with all attendees as well as presenters!!

What NASAP & the Hotel are doing for safety
The City of Milwaukee has been leading the way in the state of Wisconsin when it comes to establishing and maintaining physical distancing standards. This is reflected in decreasing transmission rates in the city of Milwaukee, and now in the state of Wisconsin as well. Wisconsin is also one of the Nation's leading states when it comes to the dissemination of the vaccine.
It is anticipated that the city and state will continue with this trajectory, and also with maintaining CDC informed physical distancing standards in the city airport, restaurants, and gas stations.
The Pfister Hotel currently has a mask standard and has completely revamped food service, guest services, and culinary operations to meet CDC standards and operating governmental standards at the city, state, and federal levels. Participants can expect conference space to be modified to allow for and enforce physical distancing standards.

How to make selections
before registering:
This year you will need to review the
Conference Presentation & Workshop Summaries
document prior to completing your registration.
Review Presentations
It is strongly recommended that you choose the workshops and presentations you want to attend before you start the registration process.
Everyone will need to choose the presentations they wish to see during the registration process regardless of how you plan to attend the conference.
Write Down Your Choices!
The system has a timer and after 6 minutes it may kick you out of the Registration form. To prevent this, write down the title and/or presenter(s) name(s) of the sessions you want to attend so that you are prepared to check the right box in a timely manner.
This is to ensure that NASAP adheres to the local area’s COVID-19 CDC guidelines and to ensure the capacity of the virtual “rooms” can handle all interested registrants.
Workshops & Presentations
NASAP 2021 Presentation Summaries and Objectives The workshops and presentations are listed by
DAY and TIME, starting with pre-conference options.
Please keep in mind that the pre- & post-conference workshops are a separate cost from the main two-day (Friday and Saturday) conference and are a great way to get more in-depth knowledge and training.
Workshops that are pending WPA approval are earmarked as CE offerings for psychologists. An updated list of fully approved presentations and workshops will be posted prior to the conference.
Plenary Events
About Plenary Session 1: Healing in the Aftermath of Hate
Pardeep Singh Kalaka in an interview by Ben Rader, PsyD
Pardeep Singh Kalaka will share with us his own narrative following the violent death of his father and six other worshipers in the Sikh Temple shooting on August 5th, 2012. We will explore together the role that community, relentless optimism, and faith played in transforming Pardeep’s despair to community healing.
Plenary Session 2:
The Courage to Be Messy: A Demonstration of Adlerian Transformative Conversations from the Social Justice Task Force
Members of the Social Justice Task Force
This presentation is both a report on the Social Justice Task Force’s process and findings from 2020, and a demonstration of how to have messy conversations about race and intersectional identity from an Adlerian perspective using the four stages of Adlerian therapy.
The Social Justice Taskforce recommends:
How to choose presentations using a social justice lens:
Choose presenters who may not be the “popular crowd” within NASAP. You can canoodle with the all-stars on breaks/dinners!
Choose presentations by/about people of color, women and trans folks, or otherwise marginalized groups.
Choose topics that may stretch you professionally or make you more multicultural competent.
Choose topics that you may be personally unfamiliar with.
